LinkedIn Poll: What is your company’s current approach to business travel?

November 29, 2021Updates

We recently conducted an interesting poll on LinkedIn and asked a very timely question that is of concern to most sales and business development professionals:

What is your company’s current approach to business travel?

73% of those that participated in our poll responded that their companies have either returned to normal business travel or are at least traveling for essential business purposes.

Only 12% responded that there is currently no need for business travel and Zoom sessions are sufficient.

Earlier this month, we travelled to East Africa to visit our business partners and a number of potential customers in the region.

In general, our opinion at Noteya Innovations is that nothing can replace genuine, in-person interactions to build and strengthen business relationships and move forward sales opportunities.

Our recent business trip to East Africa certainly confirmed this approach of ours.

In our meetings on this business trip, we firmly demonstrated our commitment to our local partners and potential customers. At the same time, we accomplished more in this one week of meetings to move forward the sales opportunities that we are managing in the region than the past number of months of Zoom sessions.

We are currently planning a similar business trip to Southeast Asia and will share our feedback in a full update when we return.

In the meantime, think about another important question:

Can you attract and close a large, strategic deal with a new customer or business partner by using only social media and online meetings?

Stay tuned for more good news to come from Noteya Innovations.

Shana Tova!

Starting the journey to work with sales channel partners

August 18, 2021Updates

Today, Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) and similar lead generation positions are in high demand. From a quick look at some of the recent job descriptions posted on LinkedIn, technology vendors here in Israel are increasingly hiring staff to generate and qualify new leads to support their direct sales activities.

For a large technology vendor with a strong, global brand and an established local presence in targeted regions, lead generation initiatives as a starting point for creating new opportunities for a company’s direct sales pipeline can be successful.

However, for most technology vendors based in Israel, our opinion is that strategically engaging local sales channel partners to penetrate new markets and expand sales is a better go-to-market strategy then trying to sell directly to end users. This is especially true for Israeli technology vendors that are looking to take their initial or next steps towards international expansion.

By selling indirectly, a technology vendor can significantly expand its sales footprint and leverage the market positions of its sales channel partners in their local markets to access new sales opportunities that were otherwise beyond the company’s reach.

A much different journey

Engaging a new sales channel partner is a much different journey than interacting with a potential end user customer. We find that most young Israeli managers, in particular those at earlier stage technology vendors, mistakenly assume that during initial conversations with a potential sales channel partner that they should focus on product features and give a detailed demonstration as if they are speaking to an end user customer.

However, sales channel partners are more interested at the start of an engagement with a potential technology vendor partner to discuss the market opportunities and business framework for working together.

With this in mind, below are some of the recommendations we always share with our technology vendor clients for the initial steps in interacting with the sales channel partners in our network.

Talk business

During your initial conversations with our sales channel partners, you will likely be speaking with the Managing Director or Director of Business Development who is responsible for the company’s relationships with new vendor partners. These are business people and they will want to quickly understand how their company can generate revenue from working with your company.

They will be very much interested to hear about your company’s pricing models and transfer price policy as well as understand which professional services, like training, deployment and support, they can generate additional revenue from on top of the sales of your products to their customers. Your company’s policy towards proof-of-concept (PoC) trials will also be important to discuss.

Promote innovation, competitive advantages and recent achievements

To be honest, our sales channel partners will not have the time or patience for long presentations or demonstration during initial interactions. Instead, you should focus on highlighting your company’s innovations and competitive advantages. For instance, if your company recently moved its products to the Cloud or now offers AI-driven capabilities that your competitions do not have or has a new customer success story, these and similar advantages will be very important to highlight.

The benefits of these innovations and differentiators along with the above business information will enable our sales channel partner to better understand how to address the opportunities in its market for your company and start to think about which of its customers it can initially approach about your company’s products and technologies.

Save long presentations and product demos for later in the process

If your company passes these initial business hurdles and our sales channel partner understands that it can do good business selling your company’s solutions, the sales channel partner will then refer you to its technical team to conduct due diligence on your company’s products and technologies.

At this stage, it will be appropriate for you to give detailed demonstrations of your products, although this will be much later in the journey. Our point here is that your initial presentations to our sales channel partners should be short and to the point with no more than ten to fifteen slides.

Emphasize support

Support is always an issue that our sales channel partners ask our technology vendor clients about during initial conversations. The issue of ongoing support for their companies as well as their customers is as important as the above business information.

Our sales channel partners will want to know how your company will provide training and strategic consultation to their teams, ongoing support for their sales efforts and, most importantly, support for their customers. From our experience, a full package of knowledge transfer, strategic consultation and ongoing customer support is the key to a successful business relationship with our sales channel partners.

Deal correctly with the realities of Zoom

Our sales channel partners know that we Israelis have a more casual approach to doing business and are aware that many of us are currently working from home. Despite this, the initial meetings over Zoom should be taken seriously and you should prepare for these meetings if you were traveling to meet our sales channel partner in person. These initial Zoom sessions with our sales channel partners should not be approached as informal chats in the hallway.

Despite the Zoom fatigue that many of us are experiencing, remember that you will only get one chance to make a good first impression. Another point to remember is that since you cannot see the body language of all the participants in a Zoom meeting, it is important to share screen time with everyone and involve each participant in the conversation.

Get ready to travel

Once the current travel restrictions are eased, our sales channel partners will expect that you and others from your team will travel for meetings in their offices. There is only so much that can be accomplished over Zoom and nothing replaces in-person interactions for building successful relationships.

Traveling for onsite meetings will demonstrate your commitment for working with our sales channel partners, will allow for better interpersonal bonding and will lead to more effective outcomes for the next steps in the journey towards achieving new sales.

What our sales channel partners are looking for today

At Noteya, we have a wide network of sales channel partners that includes agents, value added resellers (VARs), system integrators (SIs) and managed service providers (MSPs) around the world. Over the past number of years, we have been focusing with good success on Southeast Asia and East Africa and, most recently, South Asia (not India), West Africa and southern Africa.

Many of our sales channel partners in these regions are activity looking for products and technologies that can be hosted in the Cloud and offered as value added services (VAS) as well as no/low code platforms that can be used to self-develop Cloud-based enterprise applications.

If your company offers solutions in this direction or has new innovations that it wants to bring to market in the regions we work in, we highly encourage you to get in contact with us.

To learn about our network of sales channel partners and discuss how we can introduce your company’s products and technologies to the agents, VARs, SIs and MSPs we work with around the world, please contact us through the short form below.

What is a sales channel partner?

May 20, 2021Updates

A large part of our business acceleration service involves helping our technology vendor clients manage relationships with sales channel partners in targeted markets and with their large accounts.

While most experienced technology executives understand what is involved in working with sales channel partners, we find that there is a lot of confusion, especially among younger managers at earlier stage technology companies, about what exactly is a sales channel partner.

A legal definition that we typically use in our service agreements defines a sales channel partner as any third party serving as an intermediary between the client – meaning our technology vendor client – and any customer of the client’s products and services.

For clarification, it is worth pointing out that working with sales channel partners is synonymous with business development, indirect sales and distribution channels.

Types of sales channel partners

There are many different types of sales channel partners ranging from an individual who acts on behalf of a technology vendor in a specific country to a large multinational organization that promotes a technology vendor on a global level.

We segment the different types of sales channel partners we work with into the following categories:

  • Agents – are individuals who fulfill the function of a sales representative in a specific country or region on an outsourced basis. Agents are often former sales executives that have a wide network of contacts at end customers in a specific geographic or vertical market.
  • Value Added Resellers (VARs) – are companies that resell the products of technology vendors and add value by providing a set of professional services, such as training, configuration, implementation, support and so on, that are directly related to the end customer’s use of the technology vendor’s product.
  • System Integrators (SIs) – are similar to VARs in that these companies also resell the products of a technology vendor as well as provide professional services to the end customer. The main difference is that the professional services provided by an SI are much wider than a VAR and cover integration with other systems and infrastructure used by the end customer.
  • Managed Service Providers (MSPs) – are companies that provide managed services that allow end customers to access the functionality for certain functions or processes in subscription models. Many telcos and other communications service providers have evolved into MSPs and today offer a full range of VAS and managed services targeted at both business and retail customers.

There are of course additional types of sales channel partners, such as management consultants and distributors, although these other types of sales channel partners are less of match for the service we offer.

It is not uncommon for multiple sales channel entities to be involved in a sales opportunity.

For example, we are currently engaged in a sales opportunity in East Africa with a good-sized telco. In addition to providing traditional voice and messaging services, this telco also provides numerous managed services to its business customers. This telco is in the advanced planning stages of rolling out a new managed service to its business customers based on the software application of our client running in its Cloud environment.

This sales opportunity was developed by one of the agents we work with in the region and who is currently serving as the territory manager for this client. For the integration of our client’s products with the other systems running in the Cloud environment of this telco, we will be using services of a local integration partner of ours, who has in-depth knowledge of the network infrastructure of this telco.

All three of these entities – the agent, the telco/MSP and the SI – can be considered as sales channel partners and each plays an important function in contributing to the success of this sales opportunity.

Business models of sales channel partners

An agent generally receives compensation from a technology vendor in the form of a commission based on the volume of sales generated. Many agents will also request that the technology vendor reimburse them for their expenses, especially those related to travel.

VARs, SIs and MSPs each generate revenue from markups to discounted pricing negotiated with a technology vendor. This discounted pricing is also commonly referred to as a transfer price. VARs and SIs typically generate revenue from markups to a technology vendor’s discounted price list to end customers, while MSPs also generate their income from markups to a transfer price, although within the framework of recurring revenues from monthly service fees charged to end customers.

Why work with sales channel partners

The tendency of many Israeli managers, especially younger executives working for earlier stage technology vendors, is to try to sell directly to end customers in an effort to maximize the revenues from a sale. However, from our experience, this is a short-sighted decision that often gets many Israeli technology vendors into trouble and can even lead a sales opportunity to a dead end.

We will expand on this topic in more detail in our following update, although in the meantime, below is a quick list of some of the benefits of working with sales channel partners.

  • Expand sales footprint – leverage engagements with sales channel partners to access more customers and more sales opportunities in local markets around the world that were otherwise beyond the reach of your company.
  • Increase productivity – manage relations with sales channel partners strategically as if they are members of your sales team rather than pursuing individual sales opportunities one by one.
  • Do business in local culture – utilize sales channel partners to bridge culture gaps and language barriers that would have otherwise prevented your company from accessing engagements with new customers in local markets.
  • Improve awareness in local markets – take advantage of the brand, reputation and track record of sales channel partners to elevate the position of your company and its offerings in local markets.
  • Improve payment collection – use sales channel partners to facilitate efficient collection of payments from customers in local markets.

We have a wide network of sales channel partners that we have been working with for many years with good success. Lately, we have been focusing on building relationships for our clients with sales channel partners in Southeast Asia and East Africa. These markets and regions are experiencing strong growth and offer attractive opportunities for Israeli technology vendors.

Press release distribution – News coverage, campaigns and sales promotion

March 28, 2021Updates

Press releases have always been a valuable vehicle for a company to broadcast its news and promote its achievements to its customers and market. Technology vendors typically leverage press releases to announce the availability of new products and services, the signing of agreements with customers and partners, and the completion of similar company achievements and milestones.

Press releases from technology vendors should always broadcast business growth, even in product-related announcements, and should focus on the benefits rather than technical details.

Press releases are much more than just the page and half or so of text describing a company announcement. Yes, of course, attractive content correctly written in the language and framework of a press release is essential. In our previous update on The Anatomy of a Press Release, we covered this topic in detail. However, finalizing the text of an announcement is in fact just a middle point of what can be considered the overall press release project.

Good press release distribution can lead to influential news coverage and follow up interviews, attractive marketing and social media campaigns and – most importantly – valuable business development and sales promotion. This last area of business development and sales promotion is often overlooked by the marketing staff responsible for press releases. From our experience, a well written press release that is distributed correctly can help close pending deals and trigger new leads and sales opportunities.  The alternative is somewhere between a missed opportunity and unfulfilled potential.

News distribution service

The first step for distributing a press release is sending out the announcement through the service of a news distribution provider. For many, this step is considered necessary in order for a press release to be recognized as an official company announcement, especially in the eyes of sale channel and business partners promoting technology solutions to end user organizations in local markets.

Our recommendation is to use the service of an established news distribution provider. We consider PR Newswire to be one of the better available options. From our experience, the office here in Israel offers excellent service and its team always provides high end support.

Journalists outreach

Pitches should be sent to relevant journalists ahead of the press release distribution date. A well-written pitch sent to the correct set of journalists can lead to numerous interviews and extensive news coverage.

Logically, the topic of the announcement will dictate the initial set of journalists and media outlets to target. With some creativity, unique angles on the topic of a press release can build connections with additional journalists and lead to wider news coverage.

Obviously, not all journalists will respond to a pitch and of those that do respond, not all will want to schedule an interview. Some may request to see the press release under embargo, while others may ask a few questions by email or ask for an exclusive quote.

On the day a press release is distributed, the press release can be sent directly to a wider set of journalists. Including an attractive photograph or image will always increase the likelihood that the announcement will be covered in some capacity.

A similar outreach can also be conducted for industry analysts.

Social media campaign

Press releases are always a good opportunity to conduct a social media campaign. Posts to a company’s social media accounts with links to a press release and relevant news coverage are definitely worthwhile.

Actively pursuing Likes from third parties connected to the topic of the announcements, such as the customers or partners referenced in the press release, will add value. We generally aim to get at least twenty plus Likes for each of our posts on our LinkedIn page. To be honest, we do this just to give a good impression.

Email campaign

A press release can also be sent directly the relevant contacts in a company’s contact database, such as employees, customers, technology partners, investors and so on.

For this, there are many GDPR regulations and antispam mandates that must be taken into consideration.

Sales channel partners outreach

A press release also presents an excellent opportunity for a technology vendor to interact with its sales channel partners. As part of the overall press release distribution activities, a technology vendor’s business development staff should always share a press release directly with the sales channel partners who are promoting and selling the company’s products and solutions in local markets around the world.

Formal briefing calls or casual conversations as part of ongoing account management activities should be scheduled with each sales channel partner to go over the topic of a press release. For example, for a press release announcing a new product or technological capability, a demonstration can be given to sales channel partners as part of business discussions about the new sales opportunities that can be pursued as a result of the newly available products and features.

For existing sales channel partners, a press release can be used to support sales activities with an end customer that is currently in process. Many times, a press release can also wake up sales processes that have gone dormant.

A press release can also be used by a technology vendor’s business development team to attract the attention of potential sales channel partners.

This is the process we have been following for many years for the press releases that we distribute on behalf of our clients. For each client press release, we endeavor to build on the distribution of previous announcements, especially in terms of reaching new coverage in additional media outlets and expanding the overall engagement with a client’s market.

We of course will be happy to schedule a time to discuss how we can help your company improve the distribution of its press release.
